Across the world, families have experienced the life-changing impact of our efforts towards reducing ocean rescues and preventing ocean drownings.
Take Bob, a flight attendant from San Diego who recently while enjoying the ocean in Costa Rica, despite not being an experienced lifeguard, rescued 3 swimmers in distress all by himself.
From the beach Bob noticed 3 swimmers unsuccessfully trying to make it back to the shore. He could tell panic was setting in as the trio began splashing harder and harder, still not making any shoreward progress. By sheer coincidence, literally the night before, Bob had read about the “Surfers Way” to survive rip currents in the Willis Brothers book 100 Foot Wave. Without hesitation he grabbed a flotation device swam out to the distressed swimmers
Waves moving toward shore were coming in 20 or so yards over and with his new found knowledge of the Surfers Way, using waves to escape rip currents, Bob led the frightened group over to the waves where they were quickly washed safely back into shore just as the local lifeguards were arriving onto the scene.
Or consider the story of David, an experienced surfer from Brazil who was surfing on the North Shore of Oahu. After learning online at Think Waves Lifesaving Organization TWLO about the Surfers Way to avoid and or escape from rip currents he had a chance to put knowledge into practice.
While surfing in bigger waves David was caught inside by a sneaker set of waves causing his leash to break and his surfboard to get washed to shore. Not familiar with swimming in without his surfboard he began to panic, fortunately he remembered the Surfers Way to avoid and or escape from rip currents and he stayed in the waves were he was quickly and effortlessly washed back into shore. He attributed following the Surfers Way with saving his life.
